Motivation and Scope of Presentation
5G deployments are spawning innovative applications and services, such as video services, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and analytics, that require low latency, high bandwidth and greater disaggregation of the wireless infrastructure. The industry’s acceptance of Control and User Plane Separation (CUPS) set the stage for further disaggregation of 5G User Plane Functions (UPF) and closer proximity to the application, service and data in order to meet these performance, Quality of Service, and low latency requirements. Last decade has seen the disaggregation and transformation of Network Infrastructure with NFV and SDN. As we embark into the 5G era, there is a business need to adopt cloud native and cloud scale deployment models for network services. Telco Operators around the world want to emulate the best practices of Hyperscale cloud service providers (CSPs). At the same time, we have seen a growing interest in 5G and Edge services from the Hyperscale CSPs.

This presentation will explore the key tenets of Cloud Native Network transformation as a fundamental industry shift to accelerate 5G deployments including the new services at the Edge. We will discuss the key technology imperatives and challenges and the best ways to address these challenges.

Rajesh GadiyarRajesh Gadiyar

Rajesh Gadiyar is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for the Network Platforms Group at Intel and leads the Architecture & Systems Engineering organization. He is focused on delivering a scalable and efficient architecture for next generation communications platforms. He leads the architecture efforts to accelerate Network Function Virtualization (NFV) including 5G infrastructure, Edge Cloud, and AI in Networking.

Since joining Intel in 2000, he has held several positions in Engineering, Professional Services, Strategic Planning and Architecture. Prior to joining Intel, he led various engineering teams at Trillium Digital Systems and Wipro Ltd. He brings several years of experience in networking products, architecture, protocols, standards and software development for Voice over IP, cellular, broadband, mobile telephony and data networks. He represents Intel as a Governing Board member of the Linux Foundation Networking (LFN) and Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS). He is a regular speaker at industry events and conferences. Rajesh has a B.S. in Electronics and Telecommunications engineering from National Institute of Technology, Trichy, India and an MBA from UCLA Anderson School of Management.

 

Industry Presentation 2 (IPS-02, In-person): Empower 5G Innovation through Ecosystem Collaboration: Take Chunghwa Telecom 5G Accelerator for an Example

Motivation and Scope of Presentation
5G as the promising technology presents an opportunity for telecom operators to tap into new revenue streams emerging from the digitalization of industries. The presentation reports the 5G potential from 5G accelerator program of Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) at Taiwan. The authors adopt the perspective of telecom operators to elaborate on how to developing 5G innovative services and applications to build up new business opportunities in the one of the world's most fiercely contested market.

1. Develop Open platform: CHT has opened up various innovation resources and platforms, such as promising live 5G testbed network, smart IoT platform, Cloud, ultra broadband connectivity and plenty of AI/Big data engines for startups to developing innovative services and PoC/PoB in every vertical industry such as agriculture, e-health, transportation, entertainment, manufacture, etc..

2. Setup 5G accelerator: Building up 5G ecosystem is very important topic for boosting the 5G potential in innovation and  new business models. Meanwhile, CHT alliance with the well-known venture capital partners and consultants to conduct various training courses and business model tutoring. The goal is to assist new entrepreneurs to maximize their resources and funding, and be able to build Taiwanese 5G unicorn in the near future.

3. 5G innovative services: As the first 5G service provider in Taiwan, CHT officially launched 5G service in Taiwan on June 30. Chunghwa Telecom's 5G development strategy is “Ecosystem Alliance First”, and sharing the benefit with ecosystem partners is the main theme of operators to accelerate the development of 5G. The concrete achievements are demonstrated in the creation of autonomous connected devices, drone, AR/VR immersive content, Cloud gaming, enterprise vertical applications, and the development of core technologies such as information security and big data.

Tzu-Yi KaoTzu-Yi Kao

Dr. Tzu-Yi Kao has been investment manager in charge of new business development and M&A at Chunghwa Telecom since 2018. Prior to join Chunghwa Telecom, Dr. Kao has been involved in digital transformation and innovative business development in Telecom, E-commerce and ICT industry for more than 10 years. Dr. Kao received the Ph.D. degrees in business administration and management from Fu Jen Catholic University, Taipei, Taiwan, R.O.C. and APIAA certificated industrial analyst (ACIA).

Motivation and Scope of Presentation
The ​InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) is a peer-to-peer content-addressable distributed file system that seeks to connect all computing devices with the same system of files. It is an open-source, community-driven project with a global community of thousands of contributors and millions of users.

An adjacent project to IPFS, which was also masterminded and is also being developed within ​Protocol Labs (the umbrella company of IPFS and libp2p) is ​Filecoin​. Filecoin is a cryptocurrency that supports a decentralised storage and delivery network. Storage and retrieval miners are rewarded according to their contribution to the network and the mechanics of Filecoin secure the network against malicious activity.

IPFS and libp2p are becoming the de facto standard for data storage in the Decentralised Web and as such they are being used by a vast number of projects and initiatives in this space, including among many others the Ethereum platform. The basic principles and core components of the IPFS protocol stack have their roots in academic research and are therefore deeply linked with the academic world. The IPFS/libp2p stack can facilitate your research and implementation projects, and is a useful tool for any researcher.

Yiannis PsarasYiannis Psaras

Dr. Yiannis Psaras​ is a Research Scientist at Protocol Labs. He is heavily involved in identifying the future research directions for IPFS and libp2p, especially with regard to the limitations that current versions of the protocols are expected to face.

Before joining Protocol Labs, he was an EPSRC Fellow and University Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at University College London. For the past decade he has been interested in areas related to resource management techniques for current and future networking architectures with particular focus on routing, caching and congestion control. Over the last few years he has focused on function-centric networks to realise distributed and decentralised edge computing, also referred to as “computing in the network”. He held a prestigious EPSRC Early Career Fellowship (2015-2020) in the area of “decentralized content-oriented and service-centric edge-computing architectures”. He has been heavily involved in the effort to shift the Internet towards an Information-Centric Networking environment, which he is now materializing through his contribution to the IPFS Ecosystem.

Dr. Psaras has received five (5) Best Paper Awards for his work and has attracted more than £2.5M in research funding to date from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC, UK), the EU FP7/H2020 framework programmes and from Innovate UK.

 

Industry Presentation 4 (IPS-04, Live): The path towards 6G leads via cell-free networks based on SD-RAN

Motivation and Scope of Presentation
With the networks of 5G and beyond the density of antennas (RRH) will be increasing. This trend automatically connects with (a) the smaller effective coverage per such single cell (small cell, femto-cell) and (b) expectation for increased data rates (per cell). However the densification in the networks that apply the CUPS (control-user plane splits) and functional splits of the radio stack needs to also consider the rational management of the capacity and reliability in the presence of increased interferences and the threshold values for electromagnetic field exposure (PEM). In order to deal with these challenges IS-Wireless believes that it is important to consider novel approach to network provisioning, that no longer follows the “cellular” (cell centric) paradigm but opens itself to the more user-centric approach, where user becomes centre of gravity for the RAN networks. The paradigm shift towards so called cell-free (CF) networks is already being adopted by the scientific community. Although not most of the works are addressing the practical realization but providing high level understanding of this new concept. Cell-free paradigm shift is also reflected by the European Commission in their last call for proposals (ICT-52) finished in June 2020. At IS-Wireless we believe that network densification can be most effective (or even possible only) when considered together with cell-free approach, where a RAN becomes a pool of antennas (RRHs/APs) that is managed in a more centralized and coordinated fashion. Such approach to network design, planning and optimization is enabled by the RAN opening movements (i.e. ORAN, TIP) where the architecture of the network builds on centralizing network provisioning and operation (i.e. via the nearRT-RIC and nonRT-RIC). IS-Wireless is perceives trends of network centralization as relevant practical enablement of cell-less and directly participates in activities of both groups.

In addition to that, cell-free itself requires efficient handling of radio resources, that builds on top of centralized and coordinated approach. At IS-Wireless, we recognize such directions by defining and designing portable logic of centralized RAN-controller in a form factor of an “xApp” (centrally deployed and controller functionalities of the underlying RAN) – separate demonstration is confirmed for Globecom2020. Owing to such approach, where radio resources are managed in a coordinated way (see the TeamUp5G project for more details) it is crucial to address the interference classification and management. Successful approach to interference mitigation will help keeping the PEM radiation under legally constrained levels. Combining together the topics mentioned above it is clear that the B5G and 6G networks will experience more solutions addressing these topics, but also specific approach to building networks even more smart than todays is expected. IS-Wireless is fully aware of this trends and directions as a provider of software-defined RAN networks (including 5G and 4G and heading towards 6G).

In this presentation all the aspects mentioned above will be presented from a perspective of the Polish VNF vendor:

  • Cell free networks (status, scenarios)
  • Ultra dense networks (enablers overview)
  • Interference management (in cell-free based networks)
  • B5G and 6G networks (key challenges, AI/ML role and next steps)

The presentation will be done from a practical perspective of the developer/VNF provider of SD-RAN solutions, sharing views and observations of the SME from Poland.

Slawomir PietrzykSlawomir Pietrzyk

Slawomir Pietrzyk (male) acts as CEO and CTO in IS-Wireless. Slawomir is an expert in wireless technologies and the author of the first book on OFDMA, entitled “OFDMA for Broadband Wireless Access”, and published in 2006 by Artech House. He holds Ph.D. degree from TUD and postgraduate diploma in management from Warsaw School of Economics. Over the 10 years Slawomir has been supervising the work of technical team, which included two MSc projects. Moreover, he was a technical trainer for over 5 years.

Motivation and Scope of Presentation
Blockchain technology is a technology that jointly leverages and builds on top of a few existing techniques such as cryptography, hashing, Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networking, smart contract, and consensus protocols. Fully distributed control and management capability of the 5G/6G wireless systems may be enabled by blockchain technology, especially in the untrusted environment at the network edge. In this talk, I would like to present the current progress of blockchain technology and its applications for enabling 5G wireless system and beyond. In the meantime, various vertical use cases will also be discussed such as blockchain for IoT, Industry 4.0, distributed AI, etc.

Xu LiXu Li

Dr. Xu Li currently is a senior staff engineer at InterDigital Communications Inc. His research interests include 3GPP wireless systems, Internet-of-Things (IoT), blockchain technology, and data semantics. He has published technical papers on mainstream international journals and conferences, such as IEEE INFOCOM, IEEE TPDS, IEEE JSAC, etc. and has been on the technical program committee of major technical conferences such as IEEE Globecom, IEEE ICC, IEEE WCNC, etc. His current major activities include wireless system standardization (such as 3GPP, oneM2M, IETF, W3C, etc.) and he has more than 70 US approved/pending patent applications.
